History
AutoCAD was originally designed and developed by Thomas Rockwell, Dennis Beny, and Phil Brereton as a successor to the company’s CADDIS design and drafting system. The software was developed and coded by the three individuals, who had previously worked at the University of California, Berkeley in the 1980s as part of an effort to merge two architectural programs called CADDIS and CADD.[1]
Rockwell, Beny, and Brereton wanted a CAD program that could run on a desktop computer without requiring an external graphics terminal. In the late 1970s, Autodesk had begun working on a desktop-based CAD program, which became the first successful commercial desktop CAD system. Rockwell, Beny, and Brereton learned of the work and found it appropriate to their objectives. They purchased the rights to the Autodesk software and continued to develop it. The product became AutoCAD, which was released in December 1982.
