Local communities

Most of us are familiar with other major features of the 50 states, such as state capitals, their largest cities, and the iconic scenery of mountains, cities, forests, beaches, and deserts. But there are also several smaller, less familiar characteristics of each state that may be of interest.

How do you get there?

Many of the major cities and highways that are known as the core of the 50 states are often the destinations of interstate highways. Interstate highways can be numbered in pairs, so that traveling from one state to the next is like going from one side of the country to the other.

For example, drivers from Connecticut heading east on Interstate 84 to New York will encounter Interstate 87 at the New York state line. Drivers heading west from New York to Connecticut will encounter Interstate 95 at the New York state line.

How about a shorter route?

Some interstate highways bypass major cities and cities of smaller populations. Interstate 5 runs north-south along the west coast from British Columbia to the Mexican border. Interstate 30 runs west-east through the upper Midwest and the Great Plains. Interstate 35 runs north-south through the Central Valley from California to Oklahoma. Interstate 5 runs east-west across the entire state of Oregon. Interstate 90 travels east-west across the northwestern part of the U.S. Interstate 94 travels east-west across the upper Midwest. Interstate 80 travels north-south through the Western U.S. Interstate 86 travels east-west across the upper Midwest. Interstate 87 travels east-west across the upper Midwest. Interstate 88 travels east-west across the mid-Atlantic U.S. Interstate 89 travels west-east across the upper Midwest. Interstate 91 travels north-south across the upper Midwest. Interstate 92 travels east-west across the upper Midwest. Interstate 93 travels north-south across the mid-Atlantic U.S. Interstate 94 travels east-west across the upper Midwest. Interstate 80 travels north-south through the Western U.S. Interstate 6 travels north-south through the upper Midwest. Interstate 25 travels north-south across the eastern half of the United States. Interstate 84 travels north-south along the west coast. Interstate 65 travels north-south across the upper Midwest. Interstate 15 travels north-south across the western half of the United States. Interstate 10 travels north-south across the western half of the United States.
