Roblox was founded on June 4, 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, and officially launched on December 11, 2006. The platform is currently developed by Roblox Corporation. Its initial studio base was at Baszucki’s home in San Mateo, California, and later at Roblox’s headquarters in San Francisco, California. According to Erik Cassel, the initial inspiration for Roblox was similar to how garage-based entrepreneurs form the early stages of Microsoft. Roblox made its debut at the 2007 SIGGRAPH conference in Anaheim, California, and also appeared at the 2008 E3 convention in Los Angeles, California, and the 2009 Game Developers Conference.
Roblox launched a website and released the game engine that runs the platform, called LUA in February 2008. Users were given access to the online website through registration, and for a fee received free access to the platform with no ads or in-game purchases. The features of Roblox platform allowed players to create games using the in-game editor, code games in the programming language Lua, upload and share their games with others, and access other users’ games. Roblox’s platform received over 500,000 daily visitors within the first year of operation, with each visitor spending an average of 10 to 15 minutes interacting with the website. To expand the user base, Roblox released an iPhone and iPod Touch application version of the website in 2009. In February 2010, an Android version was released, which was integrated with the website. An OS X version of the website was released on January 27, 2011, making it the first game publisher to release an operating system-specific version of the website.
