We present a method of fully vectorizing a single, dispersion-free, long-cavity free-electron laser (FEL). By using a single phase-locked optical cavity containing an undulator, the maximum output power and energy-pulse duration are unified. The reason why we achieved this power scaling stems from our belief that a peak single-pass harmonic power of roughly one gigawatt is achievable, at least in principle. An important component of this vectorization is the use of an elliptical mirror. We show that the phase stability of the elliptical mirror in combination with the length of the undulator is sufficient for dispersion-free operation. With this vectorized FEL, we demonstrate a FEL wavelength tunable in the long-wavelength infrared from 13 to 20 μm, all the way up to the extreme ultraviolet. We have also obtained useful sub-millijoule FEL pulses directly from our harmonics, confirming the efficiency of our vectorization method.Tuesday, May 19, 2010

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, are today among the most extensive and well-preserved ancient sites of central Asia. They were situated on the western part of the ancient city of Babylon between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

The garden, which was perhaps the most prized of ancient Babylon’s glories, was said to have occupied an area of 1,600 acres.

However it was originally only a simple mound, an artificial hill over ten to fifteen feet in height, which rose from the marshy plain outside the city walls. Evidence suggests that the structure was partially raised by a system of earthworks, designed to hold back rainwater and probably covered by mud bricks.

It is not clear how long the garden mound was in existence, but clay tablets discovered in 1850 record the death of a Babylonian official, Nabu-zu-nadin-i and the beginning of a “great projects” by his son. According to an inscription found in the ditch beneath the mound, the project is later promoted by Nabonidus, the fourth king of Babylon (539-

[1
