35th Cantonales de Tenerife – Round 2 of Tour of Spain

5 December: Second day at Cantonales de Tenerife.

After a tough day yesterday, the team headed up to Lagos de Covadonga, some 6 km west of La Granja, and climbed 536m to the top of the Col de La Peña del Diablo. To the east lay the Lagos de Covadonga, from where you can get a beautiful view over the parish of Peñas Blancas. The church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was built in 1512, a little later than in the other parishes. At the time, Covadonga was a quiet village. A hundred years after the building was started, the village had been annexed by the Marques de San Roque. In 1854, the Marques was transported to Rome to be a cardinal, the majority of the villagers followed him as he was the largest benefactor of the village.

The day began with a couple of warm-up laps to get the legs going. After getting a feel for the first climb, it was just a short matter of controlling the effort and so we headed into the Col de La Peña del Diablo. The first kilometer after the bottom of the climb was tortuous, but fortunately the climbing got much harder after that. At the top of the climb, we found the Spanish fans queuing for the Palacio de Festejos, a building that resembles a wedding cake with icing. It was built in 1891
