Face It, you’re only 2,000 years old. Actually, just 2,017.

That’s how old you are and how much you’re likely to die from sitting.

Though scientists are still working to define the precise cause of death, new research indicates that sitting is a major factor in a long list of life-threatening and chronic ailments.

“We think sitting is probably the most harmful behavior for human health,” said Dr. John Britton, director of the Global Health Research Center at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and lead author of a study published Thursday in The Lancet. The study was published online immediately after it was released in print, and has been peer-reviewed, which means a scientist from a different institution read the article and made suggestions.

A seat-time calculator, developed by Guinness World Records for The Lancet study, estimates that the average office worker spends as much as 8.5 hours a day sitting, and that to lose just five minutes of sitting time could save 300 to 500 lives per day.

Between sitting and car driving, the study suggests about 10 percent of the world’s deaths can be attributed to the simple act of sitting.

About 26 million people die prematurely each year, three-fourths from non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, according to a World Health Organization report.

Many studies have linked sitting to high blood pressure and cholesterol. But people who spend time watching TV — a common form of sitting — can also gain weight, a 2014 study found.

The momentum of the study is growing.

About 300 million adults around the world are already practicing some form of “active sitting,” which means they’re moving more as they’re sedentary, such as standing while using a phone. The Lancet study estimates that more than 75 percent of sitting is done in a sedentary way — over six hours a day in a bad sitting posture.

The German Research Center for Environmental Health, in a 2014 study, found that people who sit in front of computers all day have higher rates of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends standing for at least two hours a day.

Britton said the Lancet study was not solely focused on health costs. “Our main goal was to estimate the number of people who could be saved if we reduced sitting time,” he said.

Britton’s team began with the “big five” — sitting
