The first-ever motion capture lab was opened in 2005 in London’s University of Sussex, where a team of researchers captured over 65 hours of footage of the world’s most famous footballers in motion capture suits using the P3’s newest technology.

The research, which followed a high-energy match between Chelsea and Manchester United, and involved the study of some of the world’s leading talent, including Michael Essien, Cesc Fabregas and Sol Campbell, featured landmark work on injury prevention and how best to manage, treat and rehabilitate the most gifted athletes on the planet.

To provide a new and richer level of authenticity, the development team at EA Sports was keen to capture the movement, reactions and behaviours of the very best footballers in the world. The fluidity of the movement of the athletes from match to match was collected on the pitch in real time.

A 7.1 surround sound setup for pitch-side or home broadcast suits provided consistent sound for all of the recorded footballers, with microphones placed strategically around the pitch to further enhance the immersive experience for players and viewers alike.

The developed technology feeds this authentic movement data directly into the game engine and allows FIFA to better replicate player behaviours and movements without any human intervention.

Developers have spent over two years developing the technology and the ground-breaking results enable FIFA to capture the vast majority of player movements to accurately deliver players’ intentions to an audience.

The technology delivers unmatched authenticity to the game, making it feel more like a live football match, with the sounds and movements of the players in the correct places to get the true effect.

“The level of movement we have achieved on these highly talented footballers demonstrates the power of the method we have developed,” said Nick Newell, Senior Animations Engineer at EA Sports.

“We have got two players from the world’s top 20 for 1v1 simulation modes and it was a huge challenge to ensure the game had realistic player movements and tackle, interception and goal chances.

“We are thrilled with the results that this technology is delivering, especially in action modes. We hope the gameplay enhancements will help players to be more comfortable when playing 1v1 or 3v3 modes.”

The technical team at EA are also in awe of the challenge of capturing every move a top professional
