A blog post on the Cloudera blog by Hadoop Inc. CEO Tom White explains how “Web scale” and the “new cloud era” have led to the development of so-called tiered-apis in Hadoop, a system that allows users to pay to use the core Hadoop APIs but also eliminate security headaches associated with running Apache’s original Hadoop release.

The Web-scale growth of Hadoop’s core Hadoop APIs has created a demand for more advanced security that is limited only by the imagination of programmers and a consistent, well-defined, economical model. Apache’s Hadoop release only allowed developers to run their user namespaces with account information protected by a read-only key/password combination. The newly released Apache Hadoop has new and enhanced security features built on the two-dimensional Security Model [see this implementation guide for more on the security model].

According to White, the added security provided by the new release “allows a developer to set up their own, enterprise-grade Hadoop environment. They build with Hadoop as if they were building custom code for their organization, and they can manage their own accounts and keys.”

Cloudera Hadoop’s offered a pay-as-you-go enterprise support plan as an option for developers who wanted to run their Hadoop code on Cloudera’s infrastructure without paying Cloudera to do so.

White said the new Hadoop release includes enhanced security, lower latency, and higher reliability. “Leveraging some of these new features as an example, we believe Hadoop’s tiered-apis are a more scalable and cost-effective solution,” White said.

Cloudera’s CTO Mike Olson said Cloudera is committed to a consistent model for pay-to-run Hadoop. “Our policy is you need to pay to use Hadoop. Having said that, the only way to make this sustainable is to build a good developer experience. We need people to trust us with managing their Hadoop environments, and offering one, simple billing model makes this easy,” Olson said.
