Dungeon Break TD Review
In a pure RTS game laymen wouldn’t even recognise as an “algorithm”, but the smart use of the “algorithms” Hyrulian, Monte Cristo and Crossover provide us a unique way to play. This is a “progression” dungeon crawler, one of those games not originally made for the MMORPG market (who would have though? It’s kind of nice to play in those rooms anyways), where we have to hunt and trap the baddies and beat them to their dungeon.
Completely different formula wise. Crossover makes much more sense when you realise the developers aren’t forced to provide a “standard way” of playing. Not even “common sense” at times, such as you can have different times per day to sneak in the AI or you can have different gauntlets an AI will be able to see. The combination of Hyrulian, Monte Cristo and Crossover are different ways to play, and that’s why the game is so interesting to play for me. The first two times I tried the game; one lasted one dungeon, and the other one about 3 dungeons. The rest of the time, I tried the game using the “algorithms”.
According to the manual, the “algorithms” seem to use a similar setup and “push” the baddies at different depth of the dungeon, all the while your character is following them. I tried playing a couple of dungeons with the AI and found the following problems/pain points:
– Predictable gameplay – for example, the AI puts tanks on one side of the cave (of course), and they attack from that side. Most enemies have two different routes, get the hell out of our way!
– Hard to push through the bunch of baddies towards the exit when the AI keeps taking the more dangerous way.
– The enemies quickly get used to control methods (using crisscross and such) and are really good at it – especially in certain items (like Amulet of Liberation).
– Every once in a while, you miss what you were thinking of, because some of the enemies seem to follow random rules and take way too long, so they can end in a maze of lies, where you can’t reach the enemy quickly enough to respond. Also this could be
