Learning how to use layers, masks, and selections is the key to mastering Photoshop.

Getting a Handle on Layers
The most common way to create an image in Photoshop is to use layers. You create each layer in a separate file, essentially creating a step that builds the layers into the image. Photoshop’s layer system is conceptually similar to the onion. The first layer is usually white, or transparent. The layers and images underneath it cover up, or mask, that first layer.
Each layer has a layer mask, which you can manipulate so that you can see or hide the layers underneath. You can selectively make only a part of the image visible. After you create and manipulate your layers, you merge them all into one and save them to a new file.
The term “layer” refers to a specific bit of a single image file. Each layer has a bit depth, which can range from 1, a single bit of information, to 8, which refers to the depth of the RGB color model. For example, you can see this image’s background, the word, and a tree. The background is 8 bits. The word and the tree have six bits each. The word has two bits of transparency.

So, if you can see only eight bits of a layer, you can assume that you can see only one color, such as white or transparent. The following sections show you how to create and work with layers in Photoshop.
Creating a new document
You can create a new document in several ways. The easiest way is to click the File button on the Quick Fix panel, shown in Figure 2-2, and choose New. Or choose Create New from the File menu.

This menu item also appears in the New dialog box, which you access via the icon with the white paper logo. You can choose to load an existing image, create a new Smart Object, or open a new

Photoshop Elements supports files in a wide range of different formats. All shapes, text and graphics can be resized, rotate and flipped and applied to an image. You can also work with layers and undo or redo edits.
This article will take you through the Photoshop Elements software and how to edit the image above in the software to make it look more colourful.
How to use Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements is a graphic editor and not a design tool. Photoshop Elements can be used to create and edit photos, graphics, text and shapes.
Adobe Photoshop Elements uses the same file format as Photoshop and therefore it also supports the same Photoshop file extensions:
PSD (Photoshop document)
PSB (Photoshop bitmap)
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
AI (Adobe Illustrator)
PDF (Portable Document Format)
The file format that Adobe Photoshop Elements uses is called AI (Adobe Illustrator).
If you open an AI file using Adobe Photoshop Elements you’ll see a tiny illustration of a camera.
If you then select the camera and click ‘Open’, the original image will open in Photoshop Elements.
That’s all you need to do to open an Adobe Photoshop Elements file. Now you can use the Photoshop Elements software to edit the image.
How to edit the image in Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements allows you to change the color of the image using the color picker.
Click the little paintbrush icon on top left of the Photoshop Elements window. The color picker is then opened.
You’ll see three small squares on the right. If you click on any of these then a bar will show on the right of the screen. If you click in a blue square you can then change the blue color to any other color using the blue color bar. If you click on a red square then you can change the red color to any other color.

Changing the color of your image is a very useful way to change the look of your image.
To change the look of your image, you first need to open a selection. A selection is a square shape that you can use to select parts of your image.

Chevy Chase to appear in voice for new Cosby Show
It’s been more than 30 years since Bill Cosby made his debut as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show. And as for the 79-year-old comedian now known as a convicted sex offender, there’s been a flurry of recent activity.
Cosby Show co-star and comedian, Hank Prince, has told the Daily News that he’s not sure whether the 79-year-old comedian will ever publicly admit to any wrongdoing.
But both have indicated that the real Bill Cosby and the character Dr. Cliff Huxtable are as close as ever.
“The Cosby Show cast members were always in touch with the real Cosby through later years. They were part of his family,” Prince told the Daily News. “They could’ve seen the real Cosby not do well but they didn’t want to see their family go through that,” he added.
But Prince says the actor is not about to appear on Cosby’s upcoming Netflix special.
“I would love to see Bill do a Netflix special, but I’ve got this thing where I’m not willing to embarrass him. I don’t want to be the guy who says, ‘Yeah, he did it.’ ”
Prince says he’s in touch with Cosby and his family and says the family has not been “scared” of the recent developments.
“They’re very philosophical. The kids have been through a lot. They’ve been scarred in the past, and I know they would never be foolish enough to make a spectacle of themselves again,” Prince said.
Cosby’s daughter, Ensa, has said of the scandal swirling around the comedian, “He apologized, and I respect that. I’m grateful that he did that.”
Cosby’s friend, Jerry Seinfeld, a comedian himself, says he’s seen Cosby at some of his late-night sets and has nothing but good to say about his longtime friend.
“I love Bill as a person. I was with him on the first night of the first Friends of Bill Cosby show. I’ve met him on maybe half a dozen other occasions. That’s all I know. I’ve always liked him as a person. I think what’s going on now, not just in the case of this show, but with all these other shows and the stuff that
