What is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD, which means Automatic Computer-Aided Design, is a cross-platform desktop design application that offers comprehensive 2D and 3D drafting, modeling and rendering capabilities. The DWG file format is not limited to AutoCAD drawings. The format allows supporting files to be “closed” to produce a single, unified file. However, the text field is preserved and may be used to store other information. The specification for DWG (AutoCAD’s native file format) has been published by Autodesk, and is available under the GNU Free Documentation License. It is available for download on the Autodesk web site.

The most recent, fully supported version of DWG format is 2010, with the 2003 version being the most common in use. DWG has been generally superseded by DXF. In June 2008 Autodesk removed support for the 2005/2006 version of DWG from the Autodesk website, but the 2005/2006 version is still widely supported.

DWG is not a ‘closed’ file format. The format is composed of different sections in an open file. This feature was added in a future version of AutoCAD called “Classic Modeling” (later AutoCAD 2008).

History
AutoCAD was originally released in 1985 as an engineering drawing program. Since then, the product has been primarily used for 2D drafting, and, less commonly, engineering design. However, the last major release, AutoCAD 2012, was the first product release that included 3D drafting functionality.

The first public release of AutoCAD was in January 1986 as AutoDraw by Autodesk and was a general purpose engineering drafting software. A license required the purchase of AutoCAD, a second license was for AutoDraw. This required a monthly fee of about US$20.00.

After the original release, Autodesk licensed the program to several companies, with the first version for use at a commercial scale being AutoCAD 3D by Alias. This version contained features such as the 3D modeling tools and more. By the mid-1990s, more than 20 million copies of AutoCAD and AutoDraw were in use.

The current version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD 2019.

Architecture
The AutoCAD file format stores drawings as a sequence of blocks. The file format has a hierarchical structure which allows the document to be organized into multiple levels and nodes. An example of this file structure can be seen below. Every node in the diagram has a unique identifier and each node has a list of references to other blocks in the drawing.
