Summary
Newcomer Christopher Corey Smith has the right skills to be a cop. However, he also has a troubled past. While investigating a drive-by shooting, he almost kills a suspect. Determined to prove his innocence, Smith visits an ex-convict named Darren (Brian Tyree Henry) who helps him clear his name. However, the brother of the victim (Noel Fisher) threatens to have Smith killed. To defend himself, Smith and Darren enlist the help of Regina King (SMILF) and a police detective (Efren Ramirez), but their efforts lead to betrayal.
The film also stars Ana de Armas as Sara, Naomie Harris as Michelle, and Lili Simmons as Keeva. Smith directed the entire film, but he’s not the only one who gets a story to tell. Smith and co-screenwriter Ramez Naam wrote the script, which they’re also starring in.
Our Thoughts
We dig the idea of the film, and the cast as well. Smith is someone who is better suited to the small screen. Finding an actor who can keep up with him is sometimes a challenge, but he seems to be up for the challenge. We also appreciate Smith being a writer and director. It’s a shame that he gave us such a limited story. We’d love to see what he could do with a better script and more creative storyteller.

We are somewhat turned off by Smith’s tendency to reveal certain things early on in his films. The reveal of his relationship with “Darren” does that quite often. Smith likes to cut to the chase in his films. While it helps him to get his point across, we don’t necessarily appreciate it in this case. In the same way, Smith seems to like being a little bit too smart for his own good. There is nothing wrong with being a smart guy, but when he keeps others out of the loop that could make a difference in his life, it starts to become a problem.

We feel like Smith would be much better off as a lead actor than he is as a director. His work is still solid, but there is so much more he could be doing with this material. He has quite a few skills, and he could have worked on a better script than he did.
