Working with Layers
In Photoshop, you manipulate the image with a collection of layers. Photoshop uses layers to store and organize a variety of different image areas, including a background, the foreground, and areas of an image that you move around or delete.
The background layer provides the baseline for your image. When you work with layers, you can change the background layer, but you don’t change the layers on the layer beneath the background layer. The layers beneath the background layer are still there — unless you manually remove them. However, if you manually remove the background layer, you no longer have a baseline for creating layer changes.
You can also delete and add layers. If you delete a layer, the content inside it is removed, and the layer itself no longer exists. Deleting a layer also removes all the content on any layers that depend on the layer. Figure 9-2 shows the Editor window in Photoshop.

Using the Brush Tool
To use a brush, click on the Brush tool in the Toolbox and select a brush style from the Tool Options bar.
Each brush can be modified by adjusting its Size, Shape, Hardness, and Opacity (the tint of the paint).
Hardness is the degree of resistance the brush has to the paint. A really soft brush will let the paint flow, and a hard brush will drag it.
Opacity is how much of the paint you see. The lower the opacity, the more paint you see.
