To access the full menu and see all of the options, click on the right side of the layer panel’s menu (as shown in the figure). I list a few options in Figure 1-1 and the Photoshop menu (Figure 1-2) that I’ll be highlighting in this book.

Making moves with Photoshop layers
Photoshop layers enable you to manipulate individual elements as you edit your images, often with the goal of blending those elements together into a final product. For example, you can use a layer to apply a filter to a specific part of an image, or add a lasso around an area of pixels to clone the pixels contained within.
In this book, I explain Photoshop’s editing tools, including layers, history, selections, and masks.
Stacking layers
You need layers to start using Photoshop — and many other editors — so they are often referred to as layers. When you create a new file or open an existing image, Photoshop creates a fresh layer for you to work with. Although layers have existed in other popular editors, such as CorelDRAW and PaintShopPro, they are not as robust as in Photoshop. For example, you can’t position multiple layers together in Photoshop.
However, the main advantage of using layers in Photoshop is that you can combine them to make final designs that are as long-lasting as any other type of artwork. As an example, your logo design might have a background, a foreground layer, a dark layer in the middle, and then a final color layer to set the total design. You might create a new layer for each individual element (such as the background, foreground, and so on) to work independently.
When you’re ready to remove a layer, you simply place it on top of another layer, thereby combining them into one layer, leaving the first layer intact. For example, you can place a dark layer over a lighter color layer to darken it. In this case, you can use the menu to select the old layer, and click on the New Layer icon. (Alternatively, you can press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+N to create a new layer.)

I tested Photoshop Elements 15 for Mac with an Apple MacBook Air and Photoshop CS6. I tested Photoshop Elements 15 for Mac with an Apple MacBook Air and Photoshop CS6. You can read more about Photoshop Elements at Adobe.com.
For this review I used Photoshop Elements 15 for Mac with a USB keyboard (along with the original Apple keyboard).
I accessed the Elements application by clicking the icon on the OS X menu.
When it opens Photoshop Elements appears similar to any other Photoshop version. There are several tabs at the top, the Edit tab is selected by default.
The first thing I wanted to test was how much power Elements can save me. On my 2011 MB Air, my 10 minute test included editing three pictures and using some of the tools to create a more involved image.
I opened the first image in Elements 15 and for the first 10 minutes things went like usual in Photoshop CS6. I did a few basic editing operations and tried out the new features. Everything was a no-brainer.
Then I started working on the second image with several small edits. Again, everything was no problem.
Then I switched to the third image. The right-click menu no longer offered the correct menu items and none of the tools I used in Elements were working right (like rotate). I realized that I should have waited to work on the third image.
Yes, that is what I should have done.
The New Features of Photoshop Elements 15 For Mac
1. Text Features
There are many new features in the text section. I will focus on some of the highlights.
In Elements 15 there are two new text functions: touch up text and textflow.
Touch up text allows you to quickly straighten the text. You can also add drop shadows. You can use the options under the text tool to modify the alignment, font and style of the text.
This is an important feature. In the early days of Photoshop I spend more time straightening text than creating it.
Textflow allows you to create flowing text. You can control the number of lines, the line spacing and the position of each paragraph. You can add and remove lines from the text. The lines will disappear when you move your mouse over them.
2. New Effects
Elements 15 contains over 40 Photoshop effects.

The Puppet Tool gives you access to a plethora of effects, including warping, stretching and compressing.
Borders are used to define areas in an image. They can be border lines (pictured right) or outlines (pictured left). Borders can be used to separate items in your design or images in your photos. Borders can also be used to draw objects.
The Selection Tool is probably the most common tool for drawing. It allows you to select and move items in an image and edit features of those objects.
The Magic Wand lets you select items with a specific color or hue. It can be used to select an object’s edges or to remove unwanted elements from an image.
The Gradient Tool allows you to fill or outline areas of an image with a specific color. A gradient can be defined using several ways, including a straight line, a radial gradient, a highlight to shade gradient, and a user defined gradient. You can also edit the midpoint or gradient angle of the gradient.
The Pen Tool is used to draw free-hand, solid lines in an image. The Pen Tool can be used to create bevels, drop shadows, or anti-aliased lines.
The Brush Tool is used to paint a variety of effects over the top of an image. The Brush Tool can be used to paint in paint buckets, liquify and distort an image, create masking, apply a gradient, create radial, vertical or horizontal gradients, and more.
Retouching and Repairing:
The Spot Healing Brush: This tool allows you to select a single pixel, a small area of an image, or a larger area of an image and restore a pixel or area with a different color than the surrounding pixels or area. For example, you can remove a blemish or repair a large area of faded color.
The Clone Stamp: This tool allows you to copy one or more pixels from one image and paste them into another image. You can use it to repair faded colors, remove small scratches, blemishes and other imperfections.
The Magic Eraser: This tool allows you to select a specific area and remove it. For example, you can remove a number from a sign.
The Hand Tool: Use this tool to draw free-hand shapes or curves. For example, you could draw a border around an image or create a bevel.
The Eraser Tool: Use this tool to remove unwanted areas of an image, or to erase something that has been drawn.
What’s New in the?
* **The Pen Tool** \- The Pen Tool is Photoshop’s analog to the cursor and brush tools. This is your “ink” tool. You can either use it to draw directly on the image or you can use it to select the tool you want to activate (see the next section).
Use the Pen Tool to perform just about anything you can do with any other selection tool or with any tool in the Paint Bucket toolbox.
* **The Paint Bucket** \- The Paint Bucket tool is another popular tool that’s always on the Photoshop toolbar. Use it to fill images with colors, adjust levels, fill with a solid color, or paste an object or graphic over an image.
Whenever you use the Paint Bucket tool, remember:
* **If you’re editing something that needs color, include the Fill and Spot Color tool options**. Fill can be used to add additional colors, change their attributes, or make the image monochrome. You’ll usually want to make something monochrome in Photoshop. Spot Color works exactly the same way.
On the other hand, when you’re using the Paint Bucket tool to change the color of an object in a photo, you need to change the attribute (like CMYK color or Grayscale) instead of using a Fill or Spot Color option.
* **The Select or Select All** \- The Select or Select All tool is a way to quickly select an object or image in the image window.
In most cases, you can select multiple objects or images in the image window by Ctrl-clicking with the mouse. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+A (Windows) or -A (Mac). Figure 1-3 shows the Select or Select All tool box at the bottom of the screen.
In the Select or Select All tool box, choose your tool (Elements, Selection), and then click and drag or use keyboard shortcuts (E for Elements or Ctrl+A for Selection) to select the object or image.
