As @White_Rose says: you are ignoring the return of a character from an async. And even if the module uses setFinalizer to do that, your return must be outside of the async as otherwise the setFinalizer will throw an error.
This has been the same for at least 2009 and long before that. You have to ensure that the app/module is not setFinalizer as otherwise the closure get junked.
Best thing about closures is to just write to variables everywhere instead of closures and just return where you are finished. Only use closures if you have a persistent variable that might change after the function returns.
